Sanssouci, Potsdam

Since I have to work a lot at the moment and can’t travel a lot, I try to make sure to see as much as I can of Berlin and its surroundings. In my posts about Paris, I mentioned that I did not have enough time to visit the famous castle Versailles, built by Louis XIV. But there is also a world famous castle near Berlin which is often called The German Versailles. This castle is Sanssouci and it is located in Potsdam – perfect for a day trip on the weekend.

So I took a good friend of mine with me and started our trip along with my dog to Sanssouci. It’s only a short drive from Berlin and it took us about an hour to get to Potsdam on a Saturday. Sanssouci is a Prussian castle and was built by Frederik the Great as his summer palace. There is a huge park with temples and follies. One of them is for example the China House. The park is perfect for a walk and my dog was happy about the new places to go and smells to find on that day.

In contrast to the baroque style of Versailles, Sanssouci is much more inspired by rococo architecture. And it is much smaller too. But that does not change its beauty. As usual I took way too many photos and accepted the challenge to choose a few of them. I hope you like it. I always enjoy visiting castles. It’s always like I’m sitting in a time machine and knowing that all the history has really happened.
